You’re sitting on the prow of a wooden rabelo boat as the fabled Douro Valley unfurls around you. The Iberian twilight glints off your wine glass as an accordion player offers up a traditional folk song. In just a few hours, you’ll trade the river for terraced vineyards and ancient olive groves and even forage for an al fresco feast at an unforgettable 17th-century manor.  And this is just a few hours of our 7-day Portuguese expedition. We’ll also be taking in Lisbon’s intimate Fado performances, feasting on the freshest seafoods, learning the stories blue-and-white azulejo tiles tell, and meeting local tastemakers too.

With us in Portugal are Daisy and Greg Ryan. The wife and husband duo behind Michelin-star Bell’s Restaurant in Los Alamos, California, Daisy and Greg are experienced connoisseurs of the extraordinary. This trip is deeply personal for Daisy, and a chance to explore her Portuguese heritage and share her passion for ceramics, textiles, seafood and the finest Douro Valley wines. “We’ve talked about visiting Portugal for years,” says Daisy. “Being able to look forward to this Portugal trip helps motivate me.”

If you want to venture into iconic Portugal, and do it with exclusive access, this is the trip for you. Meet acclaimed local winemakers and artists. Eat the best street foods, and at top regional kitchens. Catch a sunset while sipping a world-class wine. Mouthwatering flavors and soaring scenery—this is our Portugal.

3 Reasons to Travel with Greg and Daisy

Daisy and Greg Ryan are passionate restaurateurs who recognize that atmosphere is a key ingredient in any dish. Their culinary resumes are impeccable—Gramercy Tavern, Tribeca Grill and Per Se to namedrop just a few—but it's more than mere food they feature at Bell’s, their Michelin-star bistro in Los Alamos, California. It’s a new definition of ambience: vibrant plates become canvasses and every course a performance. Immersive multi-sensory experiences are their calling card, and it's why they’re a perfect match for Portugal.

Celebration of Heritage

Daisy grew up traveling to Europe and hunting down ceramics and pottery with her parents. There she learned that origin stories matter, that quality and longevity are key ingredients for everything we create. She'll take us on an insider tour of ceramics and textiles that celebrate her own Portuguese heritage.

Paying it Forward

“There's a certain level of hospitality that's just kind of ingrained in us,” says Greg. Not only did they found Feed the Valley, a non-profit that provides hot meals to families with food insecurity, but they consistently source local ingredients, too.

Knack for Details

Daisy and Greg are always in search of an authentic dining experience, whether it’s in their restaurants or abroad. Simple attention to detail goes a long way for them, from the venue or space of the meal to the settings used, be it glassware, linens, or silverware. It's true that we are what we eat, but we're where and how we eat, too.

Your Experience

“I think about the space around me, not just the sardines, the salads. What vessel does this go in? How are we going to eat it?”
Daisy Ryan

Lisbon, Douro Valley, Porto

“Daisy always jokes about how much I love seafood, so to have these meals in Portugal is the ultimate for me.”
Greg Ryan

Day by Day

Day 1

Welcome to Lisbon! We’ll breathe in the salt air and take in the atmosphere of the Portuguese capital’s unforgettable pastel buildings. Travel is the great educator—and for Portugal, we begin by immersing ourselves in learning local traditions. First, we wander through the historic district of Belém, stopping at a local factory whose bakers have followed an ancient recipe of delectable custard tarts from the monks of Mosteiro dos Jerónimos since 1837. We’ll go behind the scenes with a hands-on lesson in making these traditional wedding pastries and, of course, to eat them! Afterwards we meet up with local artists to try our hand at creating another Portuguese icon: the distinct azulejo tiles that beautifully adorn doorways and walls.

Our welcome dinner tonight is a special treat: a local feast with signature drinks and an unforgettable live Fado performance, where we’ll revel in what’s been the “soul of Portuguese music” for two centuries.

Day 1 Highlights

  • Explore Belém district
  • Pastry & azulejo tile workshops
  • Welcome dinner & Fado performance
  • Stay at H10 Duque de Loulé in Lisbon

Day 2

Today we move into the world’s most scenic wine region, stopping along the way to peek through two windows of traditional rural life. One hour from Lisbon, we’re greeted by the orange terra-cotta rooftops of the village of Óbidos, a town with Roman roots and a medieval layout with horse carriages and bookshops along its cobbled lanes. We’re here to sip the country’s best ginja, a traditional sour cherry liqueur.

Our next stop is Quinta das Bágeiras for a private tasting and a typical Portuguese leitão, Here, we meet winemaker, Mário Sérgio, and hear the story of his family and his unique approach to native varietals. His family has been making wine for at least five generations, but only started bottling their own brand in 1989.

After lunch, we reach our breathtaking riverside base, deep in the Douro Valley. Here we’ll rest riverside with a glass of Port, dusk fading into a starlit evening, and regroup for dinner—and a toast—to our new home.

Day 2 Highlights

  • Sip ginja in medieval Óbidos
  • Winery visit
  • Leitão at Quinta das Bágeiras
  • Overnight at Vintage House in Douro Valley

Day 3

After morning coffee and breakfast overlooking the river, we’ll assume the life of an 18th-century Portuguese trader. Jump aboard a flat-bottomed Rabelo boat and we’ll head upriver. It’s a timeless experience—sit back, listen to local accordion players and enjoy the gentle ride to Adega Maçanita. Here, alongside winemakers Joana and António Maçanita, we go behind the scenes at the winery and taste directly from barrels.

After lunch—paired with local wines, of course—the afternoon and evening are all yours. Relax poolside at the hotel on the Douro River, spend time with your fellow travelers on the patio as the sun sets. For the more intrepid, take in local art with an evening stroll through the riverside town of Pinhão, famed for tile-covered bridges.

Day 3 Highlights

  • Rabelo boat ride
  • Adega Maçanita winery tour & tasting
  • Lunch with wine pairings
  • Overnight at Vintage House in Douro Valley

Day 4

We’ve sampled Portugal’s history, impeccable wines, and culinary classics. Today our connection with the region’s roots go deeper—and more literal—on a fun day of creating, learning and celebrating with Greg and Daisy. We’ll collect and harvest the ingredients we need for a glorious lunch, then head to Casa dos Viscondes das Várzea, a 17th-century manor house owned by a local female chef. Here, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, we’ll roll up our sleeves and help Daisy and Greg create an unforgettable meal (hands-on and learning as we go) using our hand-picked ingredients and locally sourced wines. The reward? Our very own al fresco feast, prepared in a setting worthy of its own landscape painting or glossy magazine cover!

After we eat, we’ll return to our hotel for an easygoing late afternoon to explore and rest on our own.

Day 4 Highlights

  • Collect & prepare ingredients
  • Al fresco lunch with Daisy & Greg
  • Overnight at Vintage House in Douro Valley

Day 5

Our Portuguese adventure moves along with the Rio Douri, to the charming seaside city of Porto. En route it’s gorgeous gardens, vineyards that stretch for miles—and tinned fish! In Matosinhos, a classic industrial neighborhood on Porto’s outskirts, we’ll have an exclusive look at legendary cannery Pinhais & Cia, specialists in sardines since 1920. The best local catch, the freshness ingredients, homemade secret recipes perfected for generations—this is the pinnacle of artisanal tinned fish in Portugal.

After lunch on Matosinhos’ seafront, we’ll arrive in central Porto and ride tuk-tuks through the city’s narrow, cobbled alleyways while taking note of which neighborhoods, markets, and cafes to visit in our free time. Dinner tonight is at a local tapas restaurant sampling just-caught bacalhau (cod), Bulhão Pato-style clams, and other traditional Porto seafood dishes.

Day 5 Highlights

  • Transfer to Porto
  • Pinhais & Cia sardine cannery
  • Tuk tuk tour of Porto
  • Overnight at Hotel Infante Sagres in Porto

Day 6

We start our full day in Porto on foot, with a tour through the streets of Old Town, ducking into small cafes, tascas (taverns), and colorful food markets. We’ll watch fishermen arrive, nets full with the catch of the day, and decipher the tales told of Porto’s ceramic azulejo tiles adorning churches and subway station walls. After relaxing over a leisurely tapas lunch together, the afternoon is yours to explore—sit by the sea, shop for mementos, or people-watch in the UNESCO World Heritage Ribeira District.

Tonight, we’ll gather for a private farewell feast at W&J Graham’s, its 19th-century cellars stocked with 3,000 barrels of gently aging wines. We’ll toast our time together with Greg and Daisy over vintage ports and plates of fresh seafood and local meats, with views over Porto and the Douro River. It’s the ideal setting for our joyful farewell.

Day 6 Highlights

  • Porto walking tour
  • Tapas lunch
  • Farewell dinner
  • Overnight at Hotel Infante Sagres in Porto

Day 7

After our final breakfast at the hotel, we bid farewell to Daisy and Greg and our fellow travelers—hearts and spirits full of all things Portugal. Then it’s off to the airport. Until next time! Obrigada e adeus, Portugal!

Day 7 Highlights

  • Transfer to airport
